Leeds Institute of Science and Technology (L.I.S.T.) successfully hosted a webinar on Improving Clinical and Experimental Design: Common Errors and Practical Solutions.
According to L.I.S.T. Subject-Matter Expert, about 50% of published studies have reported design flaws, 85% of biomedical research may be wasted globally, and there is a 3-fold higher retraction risk for underpowered trials in the absence of quality clinical and experimental design. He noted that sophisticated analysis cannot remedy a design flaw.
The expert identified common errors in the research question and hypothesis, sample size and statistical power, randomization and allocation, blinding and measurement, confounding and covariate control, among others. He highlighted the peculiar errors in testing, reporting, and interpretation like data dredging, violation of model assumption, inappropriate test selection, post-hoc subgroup analysis, failure to report missing data, and treating p<0.05 as clinically significant. He recommended appropriate steps to mitigate the errors.
He concluded the webinar with a design quality checklist for participants to always run through before finalizing any protocol. He provided a list of things to be checked before data collection, during data collection, and during analysis and reporting.
